Savannah/Hilton Head/New Durham July 2016
This was another lengthy family roadtrip! It served a dual purpose for us. Our daughter was entering her senior year of high school and was very interested in the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah GA. We knew it would be a fabulous place to visit, but we also wanted to visit my husband’s family in New Hampshire. Luckily, we were able to stock pile our PTO that year and cash it in for one big, long trip. Our kids were 17, 16, and 13 that summer and able to handle long chunks of time in the car. Our youngest threw up in the car during the first few hours of the drive and our daughter lost her cell phone at a gas station a few hours later… I thought the trip was doomed, but thankfully it only improved from there!

We headed to Hilton Head Island SC for the first leg of our trip. We rented a 3 bedroom condo on www.vrbo.com for our stay in the area. We saved a lot of money by cooking most of our own meals. We also saved car space by packing light and doing laundry in the condo. The condo came with swimming pools, tennis courts, and other amenities. July is the perfect time for swimming and spending time on the beach at Hilton Head! The water was so warm and the waves were awesome. We definitely don’t have that in Iowa so we spent 2 – 3 hours at the beach each day. We happened to be there over the 4th of July and enjoyed the local festival with live music, food, and other entertainment.
From Hilton Head, we took a day trip to Savannah GA to visit SCAD and see a little bit of the city. The college has many buildings spread across Savannah and the campus tour offered us a nice glimpse of what life is like there. The buildings and parks are absolutely gorgeous – I could walk around the historical district for days, just gawking at homes and trees J We visited the Telfair Museums, which include three separate sites – Jepson Center, Telfair Academy, and the Owens-Thomas House (www.telfair.org). The Jepson Center and Telfair Academy include paintings, sculptures and other historical art. The Owens-Thomas House is an impressive mansion built in 1819. We loved every bit of it! For dinner, we walked down to River Street where there are many restaurants, bars, and shops to choose from. Our daughter fell in love with the city and is now a full time student at SCAD – the perfect reason to return to the area!
We headed to New Hampshire from Hilton Head and spent the following week at Merrymeeting Lake in New Durham. We enjoyed several days of boating, tubing, water skiing, kayaking, paddle boating, and swimming. I wish we could spend every day at the lakehouse enjoying the beautiful mountainous scenery – so many wonderful family memories ?
As always, I’d love to discuss these topics in more depth! Please message me below if you have any questions or comments!
